HOW TO CROCHET A BEANIE
Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Choose a yarn suitable for the beanie. Worsted weight yarn is a good option.
- Crochet Hook: The size recommended for your yarn (usually a 5mm or 6mm hook).
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Step 1: Create a Magic Ring
- Magic Ring: Start by creating a magic ring (also called a magic circle). This allows you to crochet in a circle without leaving a hole at the top.
- Wrap the yarn around your fingers to form a loop.
- Insert your hook into the loop, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
- Chain 1 to secure the loop.
Step 2: Round 1 – Make the Foundation
- Single Crochet: Crochet 6 single crochets (sc) into the magic ring.
- Pull the tail of the yarn to tighten the ring and close the hole.
- Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join the round.
Step 3: Round 2 – Increase the Size
- Increase Round: Chain 1.
- Make 2 single crochets in each stitch around (12 stitches total).
- Slip stitch to join the round.
Step 4: Round 3 – Continue Increasing
- Further Increases: Chain 1.
- 1 sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch—repeat around (18 stitches total).
- Slip stitch to join.
Step 5: Rounds 4-7 – Build the Crown
- Continue Increasing:
- Round 4: 1 sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch—repeat around (24 stitches total).
- Round 5: 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch—repeat around (30 stitches total).
- Round 6: 1 sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch—repeat around (36 stitches total).
- Round 7: 1 sc in the next 5 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch—repeat around (42 stitches total).
Step 6: Rounds 8-12 – Create the Body
- Body Rounds: For these rounds, you’ll stop increasing and just single crochet around.
- Chain 1.
- 1 sc in each stitch around (42 stitches).
- Slip stitch to join.
- Repeat this for about 5 rounds or until your beanie reaches your desired height.
Step 7: Final Round – Add a Border
- Border: You can add a simple border to finish the beanie.
- Optional: Chain 1, and make 1 sc in each stitch around.
- Slip stitch to join, cut the yarn, and weave in the ends with a tapestry needle.
Step 8: Weave in Ends
- Finishing: Using a tapestry needle, weave in any loose ends to give the beanie a clean finish.
Optional Step: Adding a Pom-Pom
- Pom-Pom: If you’d like, add a pom-pom to the top of the beanie. You can either make one using the same yarn or buy a ready-made one.
Your crochet beanie is ready! This pattern can be adjusted for different sizes by adding or subtracting rounds in the crown and body. Enjoy your new cozy creation!
